Proving 1 + 1 = 2 in college feels like we're going backwards. I took discrete math, thought this stuff was obvious, and failed it. Knowing how to use addition and explaining what its rules actually say are different things. Start with 1 + 0 = 1. Keep the first number fixed. Move the second number to the next number, and the answer moves to the next number too. That's 1 + 1 = 2, from the definitions. The answer was familiar. The reasons still needed explaining.
