This heart always sings the same refrain: Let's marry, hey! Last night, a Neapolitan boy went up Vesuvius. Now he calls his girlfriend, Nannina: let's go up together. He compares the girl to a volcano. The fire burns, but if you flee, it leaves you in peace. It does not chase, it does not torment. It is only to look. The invitation comes by funicular. From the bottom to the mountain is one step: a cable pulls us to the sky in an instant. From up there you can see France, Procida and Spain. And he says: "I see you". Then his head spins around her, and the heart only knows how to sing one refrain: let's get married. You hum "funiculì, funiculà" without thinking. It is the name of the funicular, repeated in every verse. Underneath it, in Neapolitan, runs a declaration of love that ends in a marriage proposal. In 1880, journalist Peppino Turco asked composer Luigi Denza to write a song to celebrate the first funicular on Vesuvius. That same year, it was presented at the Piedigrotta festival. If someone called you like that, to see the world from above, would you go up? Tell us here. 🎼 Work: Funiculì, Funiculà 🎹 Composer: Luigi Denza (lyrics: Peppino Turco) 🎤 Performer: Andrea Bocelli 🎬 Recording: live concert, with orchestra and choir Written 146 years ago.
