@holvek: On June 30, 1973, the French prototype Concorde 001 extended the observation of a total solar eclipse to a record-breaking 74 minutes by racing through the Moon's shadow at Mach 2.05 across the African continent. Initiated by astronomer Pierre Léna and flown by chief test pilot André Turcat, the supersonic jet was specially modified into a flying observatory, stripping out passenger seats for scientific gear and cutting custom quartz portholes into the top of the fuselage. Taking off from the Canary Islands and landing in Chad, the flight allowed scientists from France, the UK, and the US to study the solar corona free from atmospheric interference ten times longer than anyone on the ground. This historic mission remains the longest continuous observation of a total solar eclipse in human history, and the aircraft itself is now on permanent display at the Air and Space Museum in Le Bourget. #air #scary #engineering #education
