@hopewithholly: You left church. So why do you still feel guilty for saying no, trusting yourself, or getting angry when somebody hurts you? Religious trauma can follow you into your relationships, your parenting, your sex life, and the way you treat yourself. When childhood trauma and harmful religious teachings overlap, you may have learned that putting yourself last, tolerating mistreatment, and rushing to forgive were what made you a good woman. Unlearning that takes time. Especially when you’re also rebuilding your identity, your values, and your community while raising a family. Start with one belief that makes it hard to protect yourself. Ask, “Who taught me this? What has it cost me? Do I still want to live by it?” Which of these five patterns do you recognize in your own life? 💜 #ReligiousTrauma #Deconstruction #HealingJourney #trauma #exvangelical

After trying for 50 some years as a Jehovah’s Witness - I left. The social isolation and shunning I experienced during my association with them is something that gave me deep scars and a profound distrust of women.

The Beauty of Questions :
So true. Looking back and seeing the belief that thinking for yourself or living for yourself means you just want to be your own God. That it is evil to follow your own wisdom. — what!? Why did I take that? I didn’t see the SHAME wrapped up in that. I never asked why? WHY would trusting myself be so evil? Do I want my own children to never trust themselves? To need mommy? I cannot believe I was so indoctrinated to SUBMIT.

I highly recommend reading Anton LaVey's Satanic Bible to overcome religious trauma. It's a good place to start the journey.

I love that question. I am finding that most of my trauma came from childhood indoctrination and then ingrained deeper by a 10 yr abusive "marriage". By the time I left him, I had three kids ages 3-6 who needed me so like you said, trying to survive as a single mom while healing from deep emotional trauma that was also entangled with religious trauma was rough! I didn't even begin dealing with the religious part of it till almost 6 yrs after the divorce.
