SO MUCH TO SEE. I will not *gait* keep 🙂‍↔️ Lmao I am loving these perfect views of people walking (even if it is a zombie walk) and creative videos. Fun fact. My PT school hosted an interdisciplinary zombie symposium and gait analysis for Halloween.💀 Let’s talk about how we analyze walking patterns! Important reminder: when we assess your gait, we’re NOT diagnosing anything, we’re just getting a snapshot of your gait at a given moment in time. Simply scoping out your walk! i always remind my students that we do not know if someone has pain or other deficits accompanying their gait pattern UNLESS we actually assess. You should never assume someone is definitely weak, in pain, etc. (you’d be surprised at what the body can do). What are we looking at? Walking breaks down into two main phases: 1. STANCE - when your foot is on the ground (~60% of the cycle) 2. SWING - when your foot is in the air moving forward (~40%) Basically the heel hits ground → whole foot plants → push off → leg swings forward → repeat 📌COMMON GAIT PATTERNS WE SEE: -Toe-in gait - toes point inward instead of straight ahead - Circumduction - swinging your leg out in an arc instead of straight forward (like drawing a half-circle) - Steppage - lifting your knee extra high to clear your foot (often because the ankle/foot isn’t lifting properly) - Loss of terminal knee extension - your knee stays slightly bent when your heel hits the ground instead of being straight (possible quad weakness) -Knee whip/hyperextension - forcefully kicking the leg out to lock/hyperextend the knee (also quad!) 📌SPOTLIGHT KNEE SURGERY: After knee surgeries, we often see: * Shorter steps on the surgical side * Decreased knee bend during swing * Antalgic pattern (limping to avoid pain) * Reduced push-off power * Decreased walking speed * limited/poor knee extension!! Remember: patterns can be TEMPORARY adaptations. The body is incredibly smart and it will get it done.PT can help! Have you ever had an injury that caused you to walk differently? How long before it really started to manifest in other areas? — # #physicaltherapy #physicaltherapist #gaitanalysis #kneesurgery
