WHAT IS A WOMAN’S LIFE WORTH? Many people don’t realise that when someone is prosecuted for murder, the prosecution represents the State. They aren’t the family’s lawyers. My family went through this hell when Niki was murdered. I’ve been thinking a lot about Molly’s family and everything they’ve been put through. A sentence is handed down, the news moves on, and you’re still living with the loss every single day. I was on News Breakfast talking about the sentencing of Molly’s murderer, and why we need to get so much better at recognising and responding to coercive control. When a woman says she’s scared, our systems have to listen. She knows what his threats mean, what happens when she says no, and how he behaves when she tries to leave. If a bail decision looks at each incident on its own, it can miss the danger she’s trying to explain. We can change bail laws, but police and courts also need to understand how those behaviours fit together and what they mean for her safety. We shouldn’t need a woman to be killed before we finally understand why she was afraid. And her murder should never be treated as less serious because she knew the man who killed her.
