The journey of "Every Time You Go Away" spans five years, moving from an unreleased album track in Philadelphia to a global UK/US chart-topper. Daryl Hall wrote the song in 1980 for Hall & Oates' seminal album Voices. Hall envisioned it as a deeply soulful gospel-tinged ballad about communication breakdown between partners. Although Daryl Hall believed in the song, RCA Records chose not to release it as a single, prioritizing hit tracks like "Kiss on My List" and "You Make My Dreams". The duo's original recording featured a heavier electric guitar tone and an organ arrangement, leaving it buried on side two of the LP. Producer Laurie Latham was hunting for material for Paul Young’s second album, The Secret of Association. Latham remembered the obscure Hall & Oates album track and knew Young’s voice could turn it into something special. Latham and Young stripped away the original's electric rock guitars, rebuilding the track around an electric sitar hook (played by John Turnbull), gospel backing vocals (courtesy of The Royal Family), and a prominent LinnDrum beat. The true sonic footprint of Young's version comes from Welsh bassist Pino Palladino. Playing a Music Man StingRay fretless bass running through an Octave Divider, Palladino’s melodic counter-melodies in the intro and chorus became as recognizable as the vocal melody itself. Released in February 1985, Young’s version eclipsed the original's legacy entirely, climbing to No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on July 27, 1985, and peaking at No.4 in the UK. Daryl Hall praised Young's rendition, openly stating in interviews that Young performed the song with the exact soul and vocal delivery he had originally envisioned. Young performed the song live on July 13, 1985, at Wembley Stadium during Live Aid, cementing the track as one of the defining pop-soul anthems of the decade. When Paul Young released "Every Time You Go Away" in early 1985, it propelled him into international pop royalty and cemented his legacy in music history. Beyond the US, the single went straight to No 1 in Canada, No.2 in Norway, No.4 in the UK, and cracked the Top 20 across Europe and Australia. At the 1986 Brit Awards, the track took home the award for British Video of the Year, recognized for Nick Morris’s intimate, performance-driven concept that gave the track iconic rotation on MTV. Following the song's massive success, Daryl Hall invited Paul Young on stage in New York for an extended duet. Later in June 1986, Young performed a legendary duet of the song with George Michael at The Prince's Trust All-Star Concert, backed by Elton John, Eric Clapton, and Phil Collins. The song remains an enduring pop culture touchstone, famously featured in classic films like Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) as well as modern series and documentaries capturing the sound of the mid-80s. #MusicLovers #alex -n#music 👇 Follow for your daily music dose!
