@cars.engine.rebuild: A Mom Went a Full Year Without Grocery Shopping and Made a Surprising Discovery Ashley Mann was tired of her pantry. The 40-year-old Washington mom felt like she needed a chemistry degree just to understand the labels on her family's food. After reading about constant food recalls, she started looking for an alternative. She took a class on food preservation and made a massive decision with her husband. They decided to go a full year without grocery shopping. This was a huge shift. Ashley joked that she used to be Instacart’s number one shopper, constantly having food delivered to their door. To make the new lifestyle work, the family had to plan far in advance. They started buying in bulk, purchasing half a cow from a local rancher for their freezer. Ashley learned to can fruits and vegetables to prepare for the winter months. They also planted a small garden for carrots, onions, and broccoli, and relied on local farm stands for seasonal produce. Along the way, Ashley made a surprising discovery. She realized just how much food waste their typical grocery lifestyle used to create. Because there was no connection to the work it took to grow the food, throwing it out was easy. Now that she puts physical work into baking and preparing their meals, she refuses to let anything go in the trash. Her two young kids completely embraced the new reality and are learning where their meals actually come from. Ashley says the whole family even feels physically better eating local food. While she might eventually buy a few convenience items again, she does not plan to fully return to the grocery store when the year ends. She hopes her experiment shows that even busy families can access amazing food right in their own communities.
