It’s sad that people don’t understand the math behind this. It clears the crowd much faster and avoids dangerous crowding at the escalator entrance. And for those who prefer having an express overtaking lane, come on lah. How much time do you save by sprinting up at Olympic speed? 10 seconds?

Only if there's a crowd. If there is no crowd, keep to one side please.

i think this is not a bad idea. those who want to rush or walk up can use the stairs at their own pace

This is actually a good idea. It would better optimize both sides.

Something must have happened to lead to this. Probably someone who was walking on the escalator fell and got injured and sued.

Transport agencies in Tokyo, London, Singapore, and Washington D.C. have periodically run "Stand on Both Sides" safety campaigns specifically to curb escalator-related fall injuries.

But this would surely cause difficulties for people who want to walk up or down faster, or in a rush. Or imagine their train is here and someone is blocking… they would miss the train.

They should do it for all escalators in Singapore, it takes only a few seconds if you will to climb up.
