So a group of determined Benton citizens took matters into their own hands. At the crack of dawn, they slipped into Bellevue, loaded up the actual courthouse records, and hauled them straight to Benton before anyone could stop them. Only after that bold move did the police jury finally cave, meet, and authorize construction of a real courthouse, which opened in 1890. The town itself was named after Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton, a powerful ally of President Andrew Jackson, though he likely never set foot on the land that would carry his name.
