The fossil discovery of a lifetime. What looks like an ancient underwater garden is actually one of the largest fossilized crinoid colonies ever discovered, dating back approximately 180 million years to the Early Jurassic. Measuring an astonishing 18 × 6 meters (59 × 20 feet), this remarkable fossil covers an area of 108 m² (1,160 sq ft). Discovered in 1908 near Holzmaden, Germany, it took 18 years of meticulous preparation to reveal its extraordinary details. These flower-like creatures, known as Seirocrinus subangularis, weren’t plants at all. They were marine animals related to modern starfish and sea urchins, living attached to a massive floating log approximately 12 meters (39 feet) long, drifting through the Jurassic seas.
