It’s like thinking you’re going to stop your child holding tea parties with their stuffed animals because you convince them the toys aren’t actually drinking the tea. That’s not why they had the tea parties in the first place.

Science has already answered religion. Where do we go when we die? Back to Mother Earth. Do we have a Soul? Yes, its energy. Where does energy go when we die? Back into the Universe. The circle of life.

As a woman who started identifying as an atheist over 10 years ago, I’ve felt atheist spaces have been male-dominated and often seemed like pissing contests. I want community, I just don’t want to be a part of religion for that community. Hearing more women in these spaces will hopefully bring about a more collective and matriarchal space. I’ve so appreciated your take and the takes of other women here 💜

So that’s why it was easy for me to become an atheist because I was never really connected with my family and community huh interesting

I think there are two battles: 1. against religion 2. against religious privilege The first isn't worth actively pursuing, but the second needs to be hammered home until we can get it out from all government influence.

Belief in god(s) emerge from evolved cognitive vulnerabilities. We will always have to educate people away from religion and superstitious beliefs. Or at least until evolution catches up.

Dang. Great stuff from both of you. I don’t think belief is about very much thinking at all, it’s almost purely emotional, as humans primarily tend to be. Always awesome to see you on my fyp…. But that doesn’t mean I’m not still mad at you for making me wait till March for your new book, though!

I've always felt like having a debate about religion isn't productive, and will never be productive. Because somebody that has 'felt' God in their life, won't suddenly change their belief because somebody says "Well the Shroud of Turin is actually a forgery" or "We don't have extensive witness accounts of Jesus," because religion is about belief not logic. And it's the same way a religious person can say, "Look around, at the trees, the birds, the rainbow, can't you see God in everything around you? Can't you feel God inside you?". But the Athiest isn't going to be persuaded because they put more focus on logic and personal felt experience. It's why I really enjoy Alex O'Connor, he has conversations, and he will push back on things, but he is just trying to understand. He isn't being demeaning, but he's trying to actually have a conversation and understand a world view he isn't privy to. Conversations do much more harm reduction than debates do. Trying to disprove somebody's belief system only makes them cling to it more. But having a conversation with them, makes them much more comfortable and willing to communicate and potentially change their stances on things.

People need better coping mechanisms and a community to help them. Atheism alone can’t provide that.

i find it weird how the common perception of atheism, and atheist, is being linked with science yet it's so disconnected from psychology, sociology and anthropology, because if it was linked with those disciplines there would be no way in which one would think people are religious because of logical axioms rather than emotions, rituals, social connections, usage, etc.

Yet, church attendance is declining precipitously. Most, like myself, are just quietly quitting. I don't rail against the church. I just don't give it any energy or money. That time and money now goes directly to local social programs like food banks and cold weather shelters.

Community, morals, and cohesion work better when everyone is using the same (or similar) frame of reference (that's what religion and cultures clumsily provide). Majority of people leave because someone decided we may "neither add nor subtract" from them, leaving these frames inherently unfair

There’s a gray area that exists between the question of god and the question of an afterlife. Many are willing to abandon the idea of god, fewer want to abandon the afterlife. Even I hold out a sliver of hope that something will survive oblivion. Probably not, but I can hope. We are losing the argument to god. We are losing the argument to death.

This is so frustrating because for me it WAS about being true. I left the second I found out my religion was all a scam. The most depressing thing since leaving religion has been seeing how little people care about the truth. As long as they're comfortable they don't care if they live a lie.

Your words once again are very wise. I do believe religion is definitely not about being right or wrong but more of necessity for certain people that need that kind of mystical presence and reassurance in their life. It can be very comforting, of course to turn to some thing that supposedly has all the answers and is fully in control in the world that seems mostly out of control. I think for many this is how they maintain their sanity.
