What actually happens inside an AI agent (the 5 parts) How do AI agents actually work? Once you see the five parts inside every AI agent, you'll know why some agents run real work every day and others fall apart in a week. Explained step by step with one simple job: a client emails, "Can we move Tuesday's call to Wednesday afternoon?" The 5 parts of an AI agent: 1. The model. The brain, the large language model. It reads text and predicts what comes next. It doesn't remember anything between messages, and it can't click, send or save anything by itself. 2. The instructions. Before the model sees the email, it gets a page of rules: who it works for, what the job is, what it must never do. Like: never double-book, and if you're not sure, ask a person. 3. The tools. The model can't open your CRM, so it writes a request: look up this client by email. The software around the model, called the harness, runs that lookup for real and hands back the result. Same with the calendar, the inbox and the price list. This is tool calling. 4. The loop. The agent reads each result and decides the next step. Found the client? Find Tuesday's call. Is Wednesday afternoon free? 2:30 is open. Read, decide, act, read again, until the job is done. The loop is what makes it an agent. 5. The guardrails. The part beginners skip: - a limit on steps, so a confused agent can't loop forever and burn money; - facts from your systems (times from the calendar, prices from the price list), so the model never makes one up; - human in the loop: a person approves anything that changes or leaves the building. End to end: the email lands, the model reads it, follows its rules, looks up the client in the CRM, checks the calendar, loops until it has an answer, asks for approval, moves the call and drafts the reply. The video shows real Claude tool calls, the "Allow once" approval and a real calendar update. The same five parts work for almost any AI workflow: chasing unpaid invoices, sorting support tickets, updating deals after a sales call. Different tools, same five parts. Where the intelligence lives: one of the five parts is the model. The other four are things you design. That's why two people can use the exact same model, and one gets a toy while the other gets something they trust with real customers. #aiautomation #aiagents #aiemployee #claude
