BLACK JAGUAAAR ALEEE… WAIT, NO‼️ ❌❌❌ We’re definitely on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica 🇨🇷 This is definitely a wildcat ✅ But certainly not a jaguar (Panthera Onca). Then, what is it?! This, is a jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi). 1 of the 6 species of wildcats living in Tiquicia (a nickname used to refer to Costa Rica). With an average height of 55 cm and length of 1m30, the jaguarundi is characterized by a uniform color, a slender body, and a long tail. Fun fact: In Costa Rica, this is the only wildcat species that is 100% diurnal! Despite its name, it holds similarities with… the puma! Genetic studies (”Genome Assembly of the Elusive Jaguarundi”) published in the scientific journal « Journal of Heredity » have shown that they share a common ancestor, which is why the scientific name for the jaguarundi used to be Puma yagouaroundi! If you’ve been to Costa Rica and had the chance to see this rare wildcat, you’re among the privileged few! It’s the country’s most overlooked feline, though not the rarest! Just to be clear, we will not reveal the exact location, just keep in mind it is occurring in the Osa Peninsula - Costa Rica ✌🏼 Thanks to @ralphalexanderdebie for sponsoring your camera trap! 💪🏼🎥🐆   Follow the project @lasoncas and share to the world, jaguars (and all other wildcats!) need us to be their voice! 🐆🌴🇨🇷 ➰ #blackjaguar #blackpanther #pantheraonca #jaguar #onçapintada #jaguarundi #yagouaroundi #wildcat #bigcat #animalphotography #animaloftheday #animalofinstagram #endageredspecies #wildlifephotographer #wildlifephotography #wildlifeaddicts #natureshot #naturelife #cameratrapping #cameratrap #trailcam #neverstopexploring #jungle #tropicalforest #rainforest #thisiscostarica #corcovadonationalpark #osapeninsula #costarica
