I think he sent a powerful message starting with saying his name in its correct pronunciation. It was a nod to every single Muslim brown kid who was afraid to say their own name in its Arabic inflection at the fear of being mocked or harassed. I felt this so deeply when he did that. So powerful

I'm Iranian American and we most definitely code switch. especially since 9/11. I'd love that! he said his name the way it was supposed to be said. I am constantly having to correct people for my name. my daughter's name, my last name. I used to just smile and just let people mess my name up. When I became an adult I didn't do that anymore.

in Spanish we say Si Dios quiere which translates exactly to Arabic if God wills it. Spain was influenced my the moors and brought it to the Americas.

I'm so happy he said his name loud and proud and that he spoke Arabic. I hope children (and adults for that matter) that look like him jumped with glee to see representation. We live in a country where we tell kids they can be anything they want when they grow up now it's time to show that it's more than lip service. I am so excited to see the great things he does for Michigan.
