In Islamic governance, the Bayt al-Mal, or public treasury, played an important role in supporting vulnerable members of society. The poor, the elderly, widows, orphans, and people unable to earn a living could receive financial assistance. Historical accounts from the early Islamic period, particularly during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab, show the importance given to ensuring that people in need were not abandoned by society. Islamic charitable endowments, known as waqf, also contributed to social welfare. They funded hospitals, schools, shelters, and assistance for poor and vulnerable people. These institutions created organized and lasting systems of social support. Of course, the modern pension system, based on contributions from workers and employers and managed by the state, developed later and has its own history. It would not be historically accurate to claim that the entire modern pension system came directly from Islam. But the principle behind social security, collective responsibility, and providing financial support to elderly and vulnerable people has deep roots in Islamic civilization. Before claiming that such ideas are purely modern or Western inventions, people should read the history.
