@hospicenursepenny: The intent of palliative sedation in a terminally ill patient is not to hasten death, it is to allow a comfortable end to their life #Hospice#HospiceNurse #Education #PalliativeSedation #TerminalAgitation
My mom had so much pain and when she got morphine and serenase, she fell asleep and didn’t wake up again….. that was good. She wanted to talk but couldn’t, that was soooo heartbreaking…. 2 years ago, still not over it. I miss my mom so bad.

I want medical aid in dying but if it’s not available, or I’m not mentally clear enough I want to be medicated enough that I’m not aware of my suffering. That would be torture to me, and I’ve experienced enough medical mistreatment and misadventures in my short 42 years that I don’t need to add more

people who think it's euthanasia aren't aware of just how much meds it can take to truly kill someone. I have given enough IV meds in one twelve hour shift that the vials couldn't fit in one hand anymore because she was so uncomfortable, and yet she was still very much not dying at that particular moment

My mum couldn’t handle the last couple of days, she asked for “all the drugs” it was hard not being about to talk to her but she was suffering so badly

My stepdad recently passed in our home. We decided to bring him here verses going to a nursing home. We had pain and anxiety meds for him but he didn’t really take them. He did tell my mom it was painful and he wanted her to slip him enough to end it because he was ready for Heaven. The day before he passed, he told me this wasn’t going to take long. I told him to take as long as he needs. He started passing as we were putting him to bed for the night. My mom, my husband, and I were with him the whole time. The hospice nurse came to confirm and then the funeral home. We are so glad we could honor his wishes of passing at home with family. Had he been in the nursing home, my mom wouldn’t have been by his side due to it being late at night.

When my great grandma was in her final hours, they asked us if we wanted her to have medication, my grandma, mom, and myself all agreed that when they took her off all the machines if she showed any signs of distress administer the medication immediately. We wanted her as comfortable as possible, regardless of our comfort.
She only last about 4 minutes before she passed peacefully without medication.
MAID and palliative care are things that need to be covered more and advocated for harder.

in the majority of states medically assisted dying is still not legal, so planning ahead for a MAID experience isn't in the cards
