Fifty-three people came to our region hoping for something better. A chance at a new beginning. A chance to build a future. A chance to provide for the people they loved. Instead, their journey ended in one of the most heartbreaking tragedies in our nation’s history. They were not just numbers in a headline. They were human beings. They were someone’s mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister, or friend. Each had a name, a family, a story, and dreams that will never be fulfilled. Imagine the families who waited for a phone call, the loved ones who never got to say goodbye, and the lives forever changed by that unimaginable loss. San Antonio will never forget those 53 souls. May their memories be honored with dignity, their families surrounded by compassion, and their stories never reduced to statistics. Fifty-three lives. One heartbreaking tragedy.
