Yesterday I shared a piece of my sister’s story to show how (unfortunately) essential self-advocacy is when it comes to your health. Today I’m sharing another small piece of my sister’s story which seems to stand in contrast to that. In the months leading up to my sister’s cancer recurrence and stage 4 diagnosis, she saw many different doctors, and for some reason, none of them tested for cancer spread. But this time… she also didn’t think it was cancer. She thought it was back pain from getting older, or a side effect from the tamoxifen she was taking to prevent recurrence. Unfortunately, things had to get very dire for someone to realize that her cancer might be back. By the time she was diagnosed, the cancer had spread all over her bones; she had lesions from her legs to her skull. Before my sister’s diagnosis, I knew that cancer eventually spread and your organs shut down. I had no idea what that practically meant in the human body. I didn’t realize that cancer could break your bones and paralyze you. That it could press on your optic nerve and cause double vision or blindness. That when it reached your liver it could cause jaundice, and that it didn’t even have to reach your lungs to collapse them— your liver swelling from the cancer and pressing on your lung was enough. So if you’re like me and didn’t realize this, now you know. I don’t 100% know the point of this video. I don’t want to imply that you should be terrified of cancer. Or that you should be paranoid about having it. But I wanted to share this part of my sister’s story, and to let you in on the reality of breast cancer that I think is sometimes too hidden #breastcancer #stage4cancer #brca
