@realmaps8: In August 1914, the Russian Empire entered the first World War on the side of the Allied Powers, when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Initially, the Russian Empire achieved successes against Austria-Hungary, where they captured northern areas of Austria-Hungary (parts of Poland & Ukraine). However, they suffered a major defeat in the Battle of Tannenberg in August 1914 with high casualties. In 1915, the German Empire & Austria-Hungary launched offensives against the Russian forces, capturing Poland and parts of the Baltics. Russia had millions of casualties during the war, alongside a struggling economy, inflation, regular goods becoming more expensive. By 1916, citizens faced shortages of essential goods and the war got increasingly unpopular. The workers organised strikes and in March 1917, the February Revolution occured. Protests and strikes occured in Petrograd, where demonstrators demanded bread and an end of the war. This revolution ended the authority of the monarchy and on the 15th of March, 1917, Tsar Nicholas II abdicated, ending 300+ year of Romanov rule. A Provisional Government was established to govern the new Russian Republic until new elections, which faced competition against the Petrograd Soviets. The provisional government eventually decided to continue fighting against the Central Powers, which made the new government extremely unpopular. With German assistance, Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Bolsheviks & the first ruler of USSR from 1922 to 1924, returned to Russia from exile in April of 1917. On the 7th of November, 1917, the Bolsheviks seized key centres in Petrograd, removed the provisional government and became the heads of the new government. 4 months later, the treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed, which Russia had to surrender control of Ukraine, Finland & Baltic territories. The Russian Civil War, from 1918 to 1922, ended in Bolshevik victory. The Soviet Union was established in 1922. ⚠️ This video is for educational purposes only. #bolshevik #ww1 #fyp #russia #historytok
