Elkton, Maryland, investigators say an 81-year-old man was tied to a chair, beaten and burned with hot syrup in an attempt to get the combination to a safe containing money and other valuables. The victim told investigators he visited the home to give money to 31-year-old Taylor Falcone for her child's birthday. Unbeknownst to him, 28-year-old Austin Maniscalco was also inside and allegedly assaulted him. The victim said Maniscalco threatened to cut out his heart if he didn't give up the combination. Investigators say Maniscalco even wrote the safe combination across the victim's forehead in black marker. Falcone left during the alleged assault, but investigators believe the pair conspired to lure the victim to the residence, detain him and rob him. The victim managed to free himself and escape after Maniscalco fell asleep. He went to a neighbor's home and called for help. Maniscalco and Falcone were both arrested. Maniscalco faces charges including robbery, first-degree assault, theft, reckless endangerment and false imprisonment, along with several conspiracy charges.
