You’re 100% right. Society assumes that simply because we are women, if we’re forced to have children, we’ll automatically fall in love with them. But NOT every woman has a maternal instinct. NOT every woman has a “natural” desire to nurture or care for children. Being a woman does not automatically make someone want to be a mother.
And society seriously underestimates just how emotionally intelligent children can be. Kids can absolutely recognize when they’re unwanted, resented, or treated like a burden by their own parents. That can have lasting emotional consequences.
This is one of my biggest disagreements with the pro-life movement. Restricting reproductive choices can result in children being born into circumstances where their parents never wanted to become parents in the first place. And while some people may eventually embrace parenthood, we CANNOT assume everyone will.
And PLEASE spare me the “then don’t have sex” argument. Sex has never been exclusively about procreation. People have sex for intimacy, pleasure, connection, and countless other reasons.
Instead of pretending abstinence is a realistic universal solution, why aren’t we putting more emphasis on comprehensive sex education, contraception, and preventing unintended pregnancies in the first place?
You cannot force someone to WANT to be a parent. And children deserve more than simply being born. They deserve to be wanted, loved, and cared for.
