@empty.glances: Think about the last time you wondered whatever happened to someone who used to be your whole world. You had a girl you ate lunch with every single day for four years. You had a roommate who knew when you were lying from the way you shut the door. You had a guy who knew your mother’s phone number. You had a work best friend, and for one strange summer you told each other everything. And then at some point, without any big fight or goodbye, you just stopped running into them. You live in the same town. You go to the same stores. You’ve somehow got four mutual friends. And yet it’s been six years and you’ve never seen them once, not at Target, not at the gas station, not at a single wedding. But you once ran into your third grade teacher in an airport in another state, so explain that to me. I’ve got a theory, and I will believe it forever. I think when someone’s cycle in your life is complete, you just don’t run into them anymore. I think the universe quietly reroutes you. They could be one aisle over and you’d turn left instead. And the opposite is true too. Have you ever noticed how you keep bumping into the one person you haven’t finished with? You see your ex at the coffee shop for a third time. You keep hearing their name, and then you see their sister, and you start wondering what you’re supposed to learn. You have that one last conversation, you say the thing, or you finally stop needing to, and then suddenly it’s over. You don’t see them again. It’s like the story knows when it’s done. I find a lot of comfort in that, even though it hurts. You always think you’ll get one last moment. You pictured seeing them one more time. You had a speech ready. And there’s a certain grief in realizing that the last time you saw someone was just a regular Tuesday, and neither of you knew it, and one of you probably said “see you tomorrow.” I think about that sometimes. Of course, I know it’s just a theory. Nobody’s running a system up there, and I don’t have any proof. Sometimes people move, or get busy, and if there’s someone you miss and you’ve still got their number, you’re allowed to text them. Don’t let my theory talk you out of reaching out to somebody you love. Some cycles aren’t finished until someone picks up the phone. But if you’ve been looking for someone in every crowd and you never see them, maybe you can take that as peace, not rejection. Maybe they gave you exactly what they came to give you, and you did the same for them. I’ll always believe you never run into people again once their cycle in your life is complete. It means that everybody you still get to see has a reason to be here.
