BRAIN HEALED is an illustration, not a test, and time skips weeks. 1️⃣ A bump, blow or jolt to the head can make the brain bounce or twist inside the skull: a concussion (CDC). Most people never pass out (MedlinePlus). Signs others can spot: dazed, slow to answer, clumsy, unsure of the score, asking the same thing twice (CDC). 2️⃣ Out for the rest of the day, and back to sport only with a doctor's OK; the return is step by step (CDC). Teens who kept playing after a concussion took about twice as long to recover: 44 days vs 22 (Pediatrics, 2016). Very rarely, a second hit before the brain heals can cause fast, dangerous swelling; a 2016 review found 17 cases, ages 13 to 23, and it is still debated (Pediatric Neurology, 2016). 3️⃣ Call 911 or go to the ER for any danger sign: one pupil bigger or double vision, vomiting again and again, a headache that keeps getting worse, very sleepy or hard to wake, a seizure, slurred speech, weakness or numbness, more and more confused, or not recognizing people (CDC). One vomit right after the hit is common in kids but is still a concussion sign (see a doctor); vomiting again and again is a 911 sign. Passed out, even briefly? Get checked right away (MedlinePlus). No signs at all after a bump? Usually no doctor needed, but watch them for a day or two: signs can take hours to show (CDC, MedlinePlus). Babies under 1, and anyone on blood thinners, should get checked after a head hit even without signs (Seattle Children's; ACEP). In toddlers, signs are harder to spot: call their doctor if they won't stop crying or won't eat (CDC). It's OK to let them sleep; you don't need to keep them awake (CDC). Rest a day or two, then light activity like walks is fine; no dark room needed (CDC). Most kids feel better within 2 to 4 weeks (CDC).
