A man accused of murdering his wife disagreed on Thursday when a prosecutor suggested evidence proves his guilt.
A man accused of murdering his wife disagreed on Thursday when a prosecutor suggested evidence proves his guilt. "You killed her," said Matthew Sweet, a deputy Commonwealth attorney in Prince William County, Virginia. "Never," Naresh Bhatt said. "You did," Sweet said. "No," Bhatt said. "The evidence that we presented shows that you killed her. Would you agree with that?" Sweet asked. "No, that's your job. You're presenting. So, no," Bhatt answered. "It's a difficult job, isn't it?" Sweet asked, with no objection from Bhatt's lawyer. "I don't know," Bhatt answered. Ivestigators never found the body of Bhatt's wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt, with whom he had a young daughter. The 28-year-old pediatric nurse didn't report for work on Aug. 1, 2024, and Bhatt reported her missing on Aug. 5. He was arrested for her murder on Aug. 22, 2024. He testified in trial that he found her dead of suicide and dismembered her, then lied and said he didn't know what happened to her. "You've been planning to kill Mamta for months, right?" Sweet asked in cross-examination on Thursday (November 5) "Never," Bhatt answered. Sweet asked about Mamta calling police in February 2024. "You were holding her documents," Sweet said. "No," Bhatt answered. "Those documents are the reason that she would have became a United States citizen," Sweet said. "No," Bhatt answered. "And if she had gotten her citizenship, she would have left you, right?" Sweet asked. "She already have 10 years of permanent resident card," Bhatt answered. "But she wasn't a United States citizen, right?" Sweet asked. "No," Bhatt answered. "And if she had gotten that, she would have been free from you, correct?" Sweet asked. "She doesn't need citizen to be free. She has already 10 years of permanent resident card. She doesn't need to do anything," Bhatt answered. "But she wanted to be a U.S. citizen like you, right?" Sweet asked. "Yes," Bhatt answered. "And you made sure that did not happen," Sweet said. "No. That's your perception," Bhatt answered. "It ultimately is going to be their perception," Sweet said, apparently referring to the jury. An amazing thing for a prosecutor to say, and Bhatt's lawyer didn't object. #law #crime #court
