🚨 Toronto is putting the brakes on most city hiring as it prepares for a massive $1.1 billion budget shortfall in 2027. Mayor Olivia Chow confirmed the hiring freeze, saying it will affect most non-frontline positions, including recruitments already underway if no job offer has been made. But there is some good news: essential services will not be affected. The city will continue hiring firefighters, paramedics, ambulance staff and community crisis workers. Chow says a similar hiring freeze last year saved the city millions of dollars, and officials will now review spending line by line to find more savings. The move comes after Ontario Premier Doug Ford ruled out a new financial deal with Toronto. The previous agreement provided $1.2 billion in operating support over three years and helped the city save billions by transferring responsibility for the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway back to the province. That support ended in 2026. Meanwhile, Toronto is also dealing with rising TTC fuel costs and growing financial pressures. Chow says she still hopes to reach agreements with both the provincial and federal governments, particularly to secure funding for supportive housing and homelessness services. With a $1.1 billion hole in its budget and no new deal from Ontario, Toronto is now looking for savings. Could this eventually mean higher taxes or cuts elsewhere? #canada #toronto #news #ontario #tiktok
