@the.mr.rich: do we really think that the best way to teach teachers is by promoting Masters degree students who've never stepped foot into a classroom up to University professor roles? How could anyone who hasn't actually done the job for any period of time teach you how to do the job? University is great at churning out theorists but we need people with real world skills in our classrooms #teaching #education #university #theory #teachersoftiktok
23 year teacher here. secondary teacher training needs to mirror an apprenticeship. have a specialist degree first then do an embedded placement with pay.

My uni was amazing at this icl because about 9/10 of my education tutors and lecturers all still hold current registration, and have been in the classroom within the last 5 years. One of my lecturers even told us she was taking a year off from uni lecturing to go back into the classroom for a year to keep updated experience. I have found many of my peers had mentor teachers on prac who were only in their second or third year of teaching… which I feel like isn’t enough to be taking on a praccie.

i'll never forget the 40 year veteran they assigned me as a mentor when i started teaching who told me to ignore everything from uni because "they didn't have a clue." she was so right... i look back and i think it is almost sabotage. the guy who spent two years teaching primary school, couldnt hack it, ran to academia - wants me to believe that sarcasm doesnt work with teenagers and is inappropriate?

My “Teaching History” teacher spent 2 years in the classroom…in another country. He was a terrible teacher of uni students, why tf was he teaching us how to teach high school students history???

yeah, but i went through swinburne online, worked full-time as es throughout. the SLOs - the teaching mentors who delivered the modules were also current practising teachers so i found our online forums were beneficial.

Charles Darwin literally has a uni lecturer teaching Maths (in a primary education degree), who has no teaching degree.

I'm graduating the mteach this year, and I just ignored everything they told me at uni and focused on getting my conditional accreditation and building really positive relationships with experienced teacher

Interesting. Nurse and doctor training has mock clinical rooms before going out on placement. Would that work for teachers

The courier mail again? I wouldn't be using them as a source... All my unit assessors so far have been veteran teachers (some of which are still teaching part time) with the exception of the one phycology unit I did. I am doing secondary Design Technology though...

100% agree. Experienced teachers should be teaching teachers...(that have been in the classroom in the last 5 years, not just teachers who spent a couple of years in the classroom then got a leadership position and barely step in the classroom). on a similar note, placement mentors shouldn't be teachers who have only been teaching for 2 years.

All the Prac teachers we got this semester (and that wasn't a lot) have said they have no intention of teaching with their degree. It's a stepping stone to do something else in Admin, leadership, SCASA. It's been crazy because the school wanted to hire some for next years and they have all turned it down for outside the classroom roles. We are screwed

And for pracs - experienced teachers tend to already have big loads, be it mentoring, executive roles, extra curricular or just behaviour loaded classes - all of which make them less likely to take on prac students as well

CQU often employs recent graduates as subject lecturers with less than 2 years classroom experience. Having excellent academic scores doesn’t make them good teachers.

I'm doing my Masters of Education in primary but I am a vision impair aide. I am trained in Braille writing, reading and transcribing among other tasks I need to do. But working as an aide in a classroom has taught me more then the theory part I have to write which I will never use in a classroom. I watch the teachers and how they teach and work in a classroom and I am more confident working into a classroom then a freshly graduates that have no experience. CRT rely on me getting the class doing work. Its super annoying considering I am an aide and not the teacher. All teachers studying should be teacher aides prior to get the understanding how to teach in a classroom and how policies actually work.
