I said this in someone’s post the other day. I have 30 letters in my full name. I’m Filipina. It’s very traditional and very catholic sounding (thank you Spain) I go by the shortest version possible because as a 1.5 gen immigrant kid that grew up in the 90’s in America, most people got my name wrong or even worst “are you sure that’s how you say it?” You’d think I know how to say my own name.

My brother and I are the only ones amongst our cousins that do not have Hawaiian middle names, as is traditionally given shortly after birth. This is because after our father enlisted in the army in 1968 he was hazed so badly over his “hard to pronounce” middle name that he largely walked away from his Hawaiian heritage. We were basically raised white and didn’t receive our given names until adulthood after our great auntie gave us ours.
