@thequietstillness: Rooster and Cockscomb Start of Winter · 立冬 · the last flowers before frost How the cockscomb got its name: Chinese legend says a centipede spirit once terrorized a village, and only the village rooster dared to fight it. They battled all night. At dawn the monster was dead, and so was the brave rooster. Where he fell, a red flower bloomed in the shape of his comb: 鸡冠花, the cockscomb. A gardener's note: the crest is a mutation called fasciation, where the growing tip flattens into a ridge. Cut the heads before a hard frost and hang them upside down to dry, and they'll keep their color all winter. "Did anyone in your family keep chickens? Tell me about the bravest rooster you've known." #cockscomb #鸡冠花 #celosia #rooster #nianhua #杨柳青 #chinesefolkart #startofwinter #立冬 #chineselegend
