Did Abū Dharr really insult Bilāl for his black mother? It's the most famous anti-racism story in Islam. But the version we tell may carry a prejudice of its own, without us noticing. Start with the men themselves. Ibn Saʿd describes Abū Dharr as "a black man with thick hair." The only description of Bilāl that claims an eyewitness calls him ādam shadīd al-udma, a deep dark brown. Abū Dharr was at least as dark as Bilāl. Does it make sense that he would insult Bilāl for having a black mother? Now go to the sources, in the order they were written. In al-Bukhārī and Muslim, Abū Dharr taunts "a man" through his mother. No specific Companion is named, and no one's color is mentioned. The insult was for a non-Arab mother. Two centuries later, the man becomes Bilāl and the insult becomes "the blackness of his mother." Then it gets words: "O son of the black woman!" Both chains are weak, by the hadith critics' own judgment. Then it enters Ibn Ḥajar's commentary on al-Bukhārī. Today it's quoted as if al-Bukhārī said it. Al-Albānī had to point out that he didn't. The truth is in our books. So how did a non-Arab mother become a black one? And why did blackness become the insult? The answer is in The Color of the Arabs: How Blackness Became an Insult in Early Islam. Paperback, hardcover and Kindle on Amazon. Link in bio.
