@starshinescribbles: The final game Sony ever released for the original PlayStation was way ahead of its time. Aconcagua was developed by WACWAC and released in Japan in 2000. It’s an adventure game with an unusual premise. The fictional country of Meruza is on the brink of civil war. Pachamama, leader of the country’s Democratic movement, boards a plane to head back to the country, only for a bomb to go off, causing the plane to crash on Mount Aconcagua. Now she and four other survivors have to get off the mountain and back to Meruza before it's Independence Day, something easier said than done due to their limited supplies and time. It’s a point-and-click adventure with a big twist: you can swap between all five survivors at any time. Each has unique skills and a unique personality, so choosing the right person for the job matters. The personality bit matters more than it sounds, because the characters won’t do things that go against their personality or morals unless they’ve been given a good reason. So having the survivors talk with one another is core mechanic, as you need to learn what people are willing to do and how to convince them to do things they might usually frown at. Aconcagua is a great game in its own right, but what always amazes me is how much it anticipated. Adventure game mechanics combined with character-driven decision making is foundation of cinematic adventure games like Until Dawn and Detroit: Become Human. But Aconcagua was doing it decades before the genre had a name. It’s a must-play for any PS1 owner. #retrogaming #retrogamer #gaming #ps1 #playstation
