@browneyedgurl801: Kennedy made senators put their own pay on the line. Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana wrote a rule that holds back every senator's paycheck during a government shutdown. The Senate secretary keeps the money on hold until funding returns, and only then do senators get their pay. Each senator earns $174,000 a year. Kennedy called it "shared sacrifice," a way for senators to put their money where their mouth is. The rule cleared a key vote 99-0 and was then adopted without objection. In last year's 43-day shutdown, many federal workers went without pay while senators were still paid. Kennedy's rule only covers the Senate, and the 27th Amendment keeps it from starting before this November's election. Kennedy admits it won't stop all shutdowns. It just makes senators feel the next one. Sources: CBS News, Office of Senator John Kennedy
