A 20-knot explorer yacht that is designed to come back upright if she ever rolls over. This is a brand new Elling E6, and her owner and the yard invited me aboard to film a full tour just after her launch. Elling Yachts builds in Aalst in the Netherlands, and the E6 is their flagship. She carries CE Category A, the ocean rating, and her Kevlar-reinforced hull is designed with Elling's self-righting safety system. Back in 2014, Elling even rolled a production E4 through a full 360 degrees to prove the idea. It was gusting around 25 knots when we took her out for a mini sea trial, and she handled it very well. A single 900hp Volvo Penta D13 gives her a top speed of 20 knots, so you can nip out and back in again between the weather, and a 75hp Volvo Penta D2 spare engine, with its own tank and its own shaft and propeller, will get her home if the main engine stops. At 7 knots, the yard told me, she will cover 5,000 nautical miles. Underway, the saloon was really quiet, even with the engine just behind soundproofed panels. Elling's standard layout has three cabins and three heads, a galley set up for living aboard with a washing machine and tumble dryer, lithium batteries and a generator for nights at anchor, a big electric slide roof and a hydraulic tender garage aft.
