He is introduced as an intelligent, articulate, and seemingly ordinary bookstore manager whose romantic obsessions gradually reveal a deeply disturbing pattern of manipulation and violence. Joe frequently presents himself as a misunderstood romantic who simply wants to find genuine love, but his behavior consistently contradicts this image. His tendency to idealize women, invade their privacy, and justify his actions makes him an unreliable narrator whose version of events cannot be trusted. Joe grew up in an unstable household and experienced a difficult childhood. His relationship with his parents, particularly his father, contributed to his complicated understanding of love and protection. As an adult, Joe develops an obsessive approach to relationships. When he becomes interested in someone, he convinces himself that they are uniquely suited for him and begins gathering information about their life. He interprets ordinary interactions as signs of destiny and treats obstacles as problems that need to be removed. His first major obsession is Guinevere Beck, a young writer whom he meets while working at a bookstore in New York. Joe becomes fascinated with her almost immediately and secretly researches her life. He learns about her friendships, relationships, routines, and personal insecurities. Joe believes that understanding Beck gives him a special connection to her, even though she has no idea how much information he has collected. Their relationship initially appears romantic from Joe’s perspective, but his possessiveness and manipulation increasingly reveal the darker reality behind his affection. Joe’s narration is essential to understanding his character. He frequently explains his actions through elaborate internal reasoning, attempting to convince both himself and the audience that his intentions are noble. He may recognize that something he does is wrong, yet quickly creates an excuse that allows him to continue. This creates a contrast between Joe’s self-image and his actual behavior. He wants to see himself as a protector, but his need for control repeatedly causes harm to the people around him. After leaving New York, Joe attempts to create a new identity and start again. His pattern of obsession continues, however, showing that changing his surroundings does not change the fundamental problems within him. In Los Angeles, Joe becomes involved with Love Quinn, initially believing that she may be different from the women he previously pursued. Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as Joe discovers that Love possesses dangerous tendencies of her own. Joe’s relationship with Love forces him to confront aspects of himself that he would rather ignore. Instead of simply seeing himself as the protector and Love as the person he must save, he begins recognizing similarities between them. Their marriage becomes unstable as Joe’s desire for a perfect relationship conflicts with the reality of who Love actually is. Joe repeatedly attempts to escape the consequences of his choices while continuing to create new problems. Later, Joe adopts the identity of Professor Jonathan Moore while living in London. He becomes involved with a wealthy social circle and develops another obsession. This period further demonstrates Joe’s ability to reinvent himself externally while remaining trapped in the same psychological patterns. He repeatedly promises himself that he will stop, but his compulsive need to control situations and pursue romantic fantasies continues to influence his decisions. Joe is intelligent, observant, and capable of appearing charming and empathetic. He often notices emotional details that other people overlook, which allows him to understand their weaknesses. But his intelligence is undermined by his inability to accept responsibility.
