@btxnow: Jeff Bezos put money into salmon that never swam a day in its life. In 2022, his investment firm, Bezos Expeditions, joined Wildtype’s $100 million funding round, the biggest ever for a cultivated seafood company, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert Downey Jr.’s FootPrint Coalition. Wildtype’s salmon starts with cells taken from a Pacific salmon, grown in cultivators that mimic the inside of a fish, then mixed with plant-based ingredients until the mass looks and eats like a fillet. In May 2025, the FDA said it had “no questions” about Wildtype’s claim that it’s as safe as conventional salmon, and it went onto US restaurant menus, starting in Portland, Oregon. No river. No ocean. No catch. Grown in a tank and plated like the real thing.
