@threadofeverything: -104- In John 5 Jesus heals a man who couldn't walk for thirty-eight years, on the Sabbath, and answers his critics, "My Father is working until now, and I am working" (John 5:17). In John 9 he spits on the ground, makes mud, and anoints a blind man's eyes, "and it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud" (9:14). Irenaeus saw it in the second century: the same hand that formed man from the dust (Genesis 2:7). Then on the day of Preparation, the sixth day, Pilate says "Behold the man" and Jesus says "It is finished" (John 19:5, 30). On the seventh day his body rests in a garden tomb. On the first day, in a garden, he breathes on his disciples (John 20:22), the verb the Greek Old Testament uses for God breathing into Adam. "There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God" (Hebrews 4:9). Why Friday: "the day before the Sabbath" (Mark 15:42), the women rest on the Sabbath and come on the first day (Luke 23:56-24:1), and Sunday is "the third day" (Luke 24:21).
