@ashleyisenberg_azrealtor: In 1967, women were not allowed to run in the Boston Marathon. Katherine Switzer didn’t care. She signed up under the name K. V. Switzer and paid the fee. She had a man pick up her number. And she began running. 🏃♀️ A race director attempted to forcibly remove her from the race, chasing her down and trying to rip off her bib while trying to shove her to the ground. He managed to remove one of her gloves and knocked her coach down, but her boyfriend stepped in and pushed the man away before he could hurt her. Katherine kept running and finished the race in four hours and twenty minutes. 💪 It took five more years before women were officially allowed to compete in the Boston Marathon. Katherine later befriended the man who attacked her, after he changed his mind with regard to women in sports. She stated that, “Every day I thank him for attacking me, because it gave me this spark. Plus, he gave the world one of the most galvanizing photos in the women’s rights movement.” In 2017, on the 50th anniversary of that attack, she ran the Boston Marathon again. This time, 13,700 women ran with her. Thank you for paving the way for women, Katherine. ❤️
