Fujiwara no Tokihira and Toneri Matsuōmaru from the Play Sugawara Denjū Tenarai Kagami by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) was made in the mid-19th century. This color woodblock print, the right half of a diptych, depicts the villainous nobleman Tokihira standing behind his retainer Matsuōmaru. Their richly patterned costumes evoke the theatrical splendor of kabuki. The play draws on the exile of the scholar and statesman Sugawara no Michizane, weaving political intrigue together with questions of loyalty, family duty, and sacrifice. Within this dramatic setting, the pairing of lord and retainer suggests the tensions between authority and personal allegiance that drive the story.
