Elon Musk's SpaceX is the reported prospective buyer in a possible sale of Boca Chica State Park and Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa has asked state officials to take no action on it. She raised the issue at her first news conference since winning the election. Hinojosa said she spoke Thursday with the executive director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to "request that no action be taken" while power is handed over to her administration. She added that the matter was not on that day's agenda. The question arose after Texas Monthly reported last month that the state was weighing a sale of the park, with SpaceX as the prospective buyer. Governor Greg Abbott later said no deals would come up for a vote anytime soon, and a parks department spokesperson said the commission was not considering the sale at its November meeting. For many people in the Rio Grande Valley, the stakes are personal. Local reports say residents have voiced concern as SpaceX is reportedly the prospective buyer of roughly 1,300 acres of public land at Boca Chica. Hinojosa grew up in the Valley and has said she spent her summers at Boca Chica Beach. During the campaign she declared that "Texas is not for sale." The land question sits alongside a broader push on artificial intelligence infrastructure. In a separate interview, Hinojosa said Texas will write laws to protect residents from data centers, the large computing facilities that run AI systems, and that the state should pause new data center approvals until those safeguards are in place. She has criticized data centers for draining water supplies and straining the power grid, which can raise electricity bills for families. A chip research firm has identified planned AI computing capacity that includes new facilities at SpaceX's Starbase site in Boca Chica. Hinojosa takes office on January 19. Until then, she has asked parks officials to leave the Boca Chica matter untouched. - @elviaq91
