@richardakers27: Slade, now known as Dave Hill's Slade, is an English rock band formed in 1963. They became really popular during the glam rock era in the early 1970s, with 17 consecutive top 20 hits and six number ones on the UK Singles Chart. They were named the most successful British group of the 1970s based on singles sales. Slade was actually the first band to have three singles enter the charts at number one! All six of their chart-toppers were written by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea. By 2006, their total UK sales were over 6,500,000, and their best-selling single, "Merry Xmas Everybody," sold over one million copies. The 1999 BBC documentary It's Slade reported they've sold more than 50 million records worldwide. All four original members grew up in the Black Country. They came together as 'N Betweens by 1966, and after signing with Philips Records in 1969, they changed their name to "Ambrose Slade" before becoming just Slade. They really dominated the UK singles charts in the early 70s, with twelve Top 5 hits between 1971 and 1974, and three of those went straight to No. 1. After a less successful period in the US, their popularity in the UK was revived unexpectedly in 1980 when they filled in for Ozzy Osbourne at the Reading Rock Festival. This was a highlight for them. They even cracked the American market in 1984 with "Run Runaway" and "My Oh My." Though that success didn't last, the band split in 1992, but Dave Hill and Don Powell re-formed as Slade II later that year. They continue to perform today as Dave Hill's Slade, even touring in 2025 and 2026. Many artists from different genres have cited Slade as an influence. They were known for Holder's powerful vocals, Dave Hill's eye-catching style, and their unique song title spellings like "Cum On Feel the Noize." #Slade #GlamRock #MusicHistory #RockBand #onthisday
