you’ve sat there, don’t lie, with his phone in your head, doing inventory. who’s that girl he keeps liking. why does she comment on everything. you’ve brought it up as casually as you possibly can, voice all light, like “hey, random question.” you’ve had the fight. you’ve said “if it was me you’d be upset too.” you’ve maybe even won. he sighed and rolled his eyes and went through his list and hit unfollow, unfollow, unfollow, while you sat next to him. and for about an hour, you felt relieved. then you felt something else. because you got what you asked for, and it didn’t feel like anything. you know exactly what he was thinking when he did it. he wasn’t thinking “she’s right, you deserve better.” he was thinking “fine, whatever, anything to end this conversation.” so now you’re not just wondering whether he wants to look at those girls. you’re wondering if he resents you for it. you’re checking his following count like a parole officer. you’ve turned into somebody you never wanted to be, the one with the rules, the one who has to monitor, the warden of a man who could always make a new account 😭 and he gets to walk away from all of it telling his friends that his girl is so controlling. that’s the part that really stings. you never wanted to be in charge of that. nobody dreams about growing up to supervise a grown man’s explore page. you wanted to feel safe, and you thought a rule could do what his respect wouldn’t. so here’s the honest truth, and it took a lot of us way too long to get here. you can make somebody do something, but you can’t make them want to. a boundary is still valid. asking your partner for basic respect isn’t crazy, and if something makes you uncomfortable you get to say so. i’m not telling you to shrink, or to be the cool girl who doesn’t care. i’m saying watch what happens after you say it. a man who loves you doesn’t need to be walked through it. he notices what would hurt you and handles it before you ever have to find out. he doesn’t do it to pass a test. he does it because you’re the only one he’s looking for. you’d know the difference immediately, because you’d never have to think about it at all. that’s what you’re holding out for now. not someone you can talk into it. someone who already got there alone. so no, nobody’s catching you being that girl ever again. the next one is going to want to unfollow them on his own, or he’s just not going to be the next one.
