Finding your purpose might be one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. To me, purpose is where three things meet: Something you’re good at. Something people actually need. Something that brings you joy. When you find all three in the same place, work starts feeling a whole lot less like work. It took me a LONG time to figure that out. During 20 years in the Air Force, I had three different career fields and somewhere around 15 different assignments. I worked on the flight line. I became a medic. I served as a commander’s executive officer. I led Military Funeral Honors. I worked pandemic operations. I helped run retirements, changes of command, graduations, Air Force Balls and events I never imagined I’d be responsible for when I first raised my hand. And somewhere inside all of that variety, I started figuring out what I was actually good at. More importantly, I figured out what kind of work made me feel alive. That’s one of the most underrated benefits of military service. You get opportunities to try completely different types of work while still having the safety net of a paycheck, a team, benefits, leadership and an organization around you. The civilian world usually doesn’t give you that same luxury. Changing industries can mean starting over. Trying something completely different can mean risking your income. Sometimes you don’t know whether you’ll enjoy a job until you’re already in it. So while you’re still serving, TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE VARIETY. Volunteer for the weird assignment. Help run the event. Take the special duty. Try something outside your career field. Lead something you’ve never led before. Say yes to opportunities that make you nervous. Every one of those experiences gives you another piece of information about yourself. What am I good at? What do people keep asking me to help with? What kind of work makes three hours feel like 30 minutes? What would I still care about even if nobody handed me an award for doing it? You don’t have to wait until retirement or separation to start figuring out what comes next. Use the military to experiment while you still have the opportunity. Because when your time eventually comes to take the uniform off, the goal shouldn’t just be knowing what job you can get. It should be knowing what kind of work you were built to do. #miltok #militarylife #transition #leadershiptips
