This is my absolute favorite fruit. We had 80 feet of prickly pear cactus on our back fence. My poor uncle who had a hard time walking would walk about 250 feet to the cactus with a large porcelain covered steel bowl and cut all the pears with a knife and fork he put on the end of two long handles. Fill the bowl and take them under the weeping willow tree to peel. Then he would put them in the fridge for us when we got out of school. We also had 27 fruit trees. Apricot, pomegranate, gooseberry, white peach,loquat, plum, Leno a lime (same tree), and quince. It looked like a Norman Rockwell painting. It’s one of my greatest childhood memories. I wish I had taken a picture.

Those are so yummy especially fresh off the cactus, but I would suggest not eating too many or you will cleanse your colon for the next 10 lifetimes.😳🤭🤭🤭🤭

That's a great method. For anyone that hasn't tried, each little bump is covered in dam near invisible spines that really suck.

It tastes like a combination of sweet citrus, watermelon, strawberry and grape. It’s is a pleasant sweet taste. In my opinion if you refrigerate them before eating the flavors are enhanced. Although it’s pretty hard to find a good prickly pear in the desert. I’ve hiked many miles in the desert and out of 20 tries I find one that’s really good. You cut them when they are light green, red and orange. Sooo good.

I’ve never ate them raw. We always made jelly out of them. They called it cactus jelly.
