Not every beautiful photograph needs a blue sky or golden sunshine. When we arrived at Tunnel View, the sky was gray, heavy clouds were rolling through the valley, and rain was approaching. We had only a short window to take photographs before heading back to our cars to stay dry. The clouds were moving down from the mountains, slowly filling Yosemite Valley like a blanket of mist. It almost felt as if the sky was descending to meet the earth. The original colors were beautiful in their own way, but the gray atmosphere inspired me to see this scene differently. I decided to turn the photograph into black and white, bringing out the dramatic contrast between the mountains, the clouds, and the endless forest below. We have returned to this place several times over the years, hoping to capture another unforgettable moment. Yet, somehow, I still haven’t found another photograph that impresses me quite as much as this one. Perhaps it wasn’t the weather we had hoped for, but it was exactly the weather that created this photograph. Sometimes, the unexpected moments become the most memorable ones.
