over 2.5 years, i spent more than $60k on prop firm challenges. painful, embarrassing, and easily some of the most expensive lessons i’ve ever learned. but those losses also forced me to understand what was actually keeping me unprofitable. here’s what changed everything for me: 1⃣ oversizing is one of the fastest ways to lose an account. prop firm drawdown rules leave very little room for oversized positions, especially with trailing drawdowns. i used to think bigger size meant faster progress. in reality, it just meant less room for mistakes. now i keep my size small and personally stick to 1 micro for every 1k of drawdown. 2⃣ trading became much easier once i stopped treating it as only a strategy problem. this was probably my biggest lesson. after what felt like the 300th “account blown” email, i realized my technical edge wasn’t the only issue. what mattered just as much was the state i was in while trading. after a loss, stress could completely change the way i made decisions. that was the state where i’d break rules, chase trades and almost feel like i was watching myself do it. learning how to regulate myself before and during a session became a huge part of finally getting more consistent. 3⃣ passing the challenge isn’t always the hardest part. i could pass challenges, then blow funded accounts within hours or days. once the account felt like “real money,” i put completely different pressure on myself. i traded scared, focused too much on protecting the account and stopped executing normally. now i put much more attention on how i prepare before the market even opens. 4⃣ focus on one account and one prop firm. i used to trade multiple accounts and firms at the same time because i thought that was how i’d make big money faster. all it really did was multiply the pressure. now i’d rather focus on one account, get it to a payout, and build from there. 5⃣ trading can easily start feeling like gambling if you’re not careful. i stopped trading the market and started chasing the feeling of a win. every new challenge felt like another chance to finally “fix everything.” that mindset cost me hundreds of accounts. if you’re trading for excitement, urgency or the fantasy of changing your life overnight, it becomes very hard to execute like someone building a long-term career. 6⃣ stop chasing “max payout” and “minimum trading days.” i used to obsess over finishing challenges as quickly as possible. i can’t count how many times i was only $100 away from passing and blew the entire account trying to force the last little bit. now i focus on the setup instead of the number. the second i start trading for a specific dollar amount, my decision-making gets worse. 7⃣ stop comparing yourself to other traders. i spent years comparing my chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 20, and half the time i didn’t even know if what i was seeing online was real. it made me oversize, overtrade and try to prove that i could make big money too. eventually i learned that comparison was only pulling me away from my own process. now i focus on building one step at a time and actually noticing the progress i’m making. $60k+ was an insanely expensive education, but the biggest lesson was this: becoming profitable wasn’t about finding one magical setup. it was about changing the way i sized, prepared, reacted, and behaved around the market. #tradingforbeginners #propfirms #daytrading #tradingmindset #femaletrader
