Who remembers Corporal Nauyokas from Bad Lads’ Army? The television audience knew him simply as “Corporal Nauyokas”. But in real life, Richard “Nooky” Nauyokas had already completed around 22 years in the British Army and risen to Warrant Officer Class Two, serving as a Squadron Sergeant Major. Born in Grantham in 1962, he joined the Army in 1980, initially serving with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. When the RAOC was absorbed into the newly formed Royal Logistic Corps in 1993, his career continued under the RLC. During his service he worked as a driver, radio operator, Physical Training Instructor and Military Training Instructor, with service associated with Germany, Bosnia and Kosovo. Then came television. ITV’s Lads’ Army placed young men into a recreated old-style military training environment. Nauyokas later explained that he had originally applied to be the programme’s Sergeant Major, but was instead cast as a corporal. That television rank was just that — a role. In the real Army, he had finished as a WO2 and Squadron Sergeant Major. He became one of the programme’s most recognisable instructors, commanding 1 Section and returning through Lads’ Army and Bad Lads’ Army, including Bad Lads’ Army: Extreme in 2006. Away from television, he put that experience to very different use. In 2005 he established Not All Bad, working with young people who were difficult to engage through conventional routes. His later work included youth programmes and support connected with prisons. And his military story still wasn’t finished. By 2013–14, Nauyokas was documented as a Sergeant at RAF College Cranwell. More than a decade later, in 2024, he was still being described as serving with the RAF as a senior NCO in a discipline role. So the “Corporal Nauyokas” viewers saw on television was actually a former Army WO2 and Squadron Sergeant Major, an experienced military instructor — and a man whose connection with the Armed Forces continued long after Bad Lads’ Army had disappeared from our screens. What do you remember most about Corporal Nauyokas — or about Bad Lads’ Army itself? #BadLadsArmy #LadsArmy #BritishArmy #MilitaryHistory
