Didn't start with the MKP, the New National Party and the Democratic Party did the same in the Western Cape back in 1999 against the ANC which had around 38% support in the province, that brought about the formation of the Democratic Alliance and Floor Crossing legislation that allowed elected members of the two formerly white parties to cross the floor without losing their seats.
