I copped so much criticism on the internet after I won the Crown Championships of Cosplay that I found it difficult to make myself post about it for a long while. I wasn't pretty enough. I didn't look enough like Halsin. My costume was too simple. One comment rolls off your back, but the internet has a way of amplifying terrible takes, like a swarm of buzzing flies. They stick around, even when you try to shoo them off. I'm trying to get better at sitting with it all. I'm trying to disentangle that feeling of cringe from what I actually achieved in Chicago back in May. Adam and the @Adam Savage’s Tested team even made an extremely thoughtful video about my costume that I'm told was utterly wonderful (and Adam is just the most singularly enthusiastic and thoughtful human in the world) but being truthful ... I haven't watched the whole thing, because for the longest time, I felt like I hadn't earned the accolades. All those awful internet comments still buzzed around in my head. Instead Scrap and I threw ourselves straight into work when we got back to Australia, and I never really got to properly celebrate this moment - something I'd worked excruciatingly hard for, pouring all of my heart and soul and my deep, deep love of Baldur's Gate (and the wonderful quiet integrity of Halsin that resonated with me so much) into one singular project that consumed a year and a half of my spare time. Making this costume and winning the Global Crown Championship of Cosplay was still the culmination of a dream long held. Something I never imagined I'd be able to achieve. And honestly, I'm really bloody proud of all the work that I did, and I suppose this little video is trying to reclaim some of that feeling. Huge shoutout to @kaminsky_kandids_photography (IG) for taking beautiful photos of all the the entrants (please do go look at the incredible work from all the other entrants), and the photos here. And much love to @matthew__barry (IG) for such an enthusiastic presentation of the awards, (and to the other wonderful judges, @Trine and @Casey Renee Cosplay) - Hench
