@shawnthefoodsheep: Montrose has a new listening bar inside an old Victorian. 🎶 Casalu comes from Lutfi Rukab, a DJ and co-owner of Brookstreet Bar-B-Q. Inspired by listening bars in Europe and New York, he built the room around two turntables, custom German speakers, and a hand-built Japanese rotary mixer. The team told me their mixer is number 77 of just 100 made. Local and regional DJs play everything from jazz and disco to French house, and the sound system is designed so you can hear the details in a record and still talk to the person next to you. The cocktail menu nods to Rukab’s Palestinian roots. I started with Midnight Luce, a nutty espresso martini made with house-made tahini syrup, then had Pomegranate Frequencies, a tart blanco tequila cocktail with pomegranate two ways, mango, grapefruit, and lime. Their alcohol-free elixirs are made with health-conscious drinkers in mind, with ingredients like cold-pressed greens and coconut water. The jet-black one I tried appears to be Mono Mix, a grapefruit and lemon drink sweetened with agave and colored with activated charcoal. 📵 Management told me that filming and flash photography aren’t allowed.
