"hey neighbor go talk to the potentially armed screaming person" 😒 as the daughter of a mentally ill addict I'll never understand this take. sometimes ppl can't be just talked to

One of the best things about being a social service worker, is when I see someone in crisis I have the skills to offer them help. I love knowing I can support my community.

This is why Denver created STAR. It's essentially a mental health response team. If you call dispatch about someone having a crisis, they send trained professionals. The only problem is that it's barely funded. It's shown to be incredibly effective though.

I did this with success when I found a drunk, angry, bloody woman sitting on my couch when I got home from work. I called my neighbor who is a nurse, found her friends at the bar, and we drove her and a friend to the hospital. She sent me flowers as a "thank you, I'm sorry" and we're friends and she's my lawyer now 😭

my upstairs neighbors are always screaming at each other. well actually mostly just him screaming at her. and it sounds like knocking things over as well. I'm legitimately concerned but also I don't call the cops on people especially since I don't know my neighbors I don't know if they're people of color and I don't want anyone shot.

What do you do if it’s gunshots? Or if it is a stranger who may be violent? I don’t want to send my friends and family out there to get hurt or worse. This is a genuine question not an argument for the cops - I don’t like to call the cops either.

I suggest that people look into mental health first aid training at mentalhealthfirstaid.org. It can really help in situations like this. You may also be able to find free training sessions. Get a group of people together and sign up!

Love this. Want this, the reality is though, we are decades away from this level of care. The time it takes to establish working systems like this is hardly ever discussed and then people get frustrated that results aren’t instant. But let’s get started!

I usually just ignore them. I live across the street from a gas station and one street from the court house so this video isn't for me

There should be an app for people to build their own PODS. Maybe you can enter what your good at or can help with and when your available or something

So I live out in the country. I’ve been considering inviting my neighbors to a free meal to discuss how we can be a pod.

Fact is, we need more finding for mental health intervention. I'm not about to get stabbed or beat tbh. A lot of folks won't step in for exactly this reason . I can handle first aid and cpr but not knives and such.

I love your content, and I normally agree with all your videos. However, I must disagree with you on this one. Especially when it comes to dealing with unstable people in your community. If something goes wrong and it escalates to physical violence, you yourself can be found liable. You may find yourself getting sued or even in jail.
